Yes, we all know what chiros do and what they claim to be able to do. What seems to be lacking is much good evidence that what they do actually has any benefit or is safe.

Zeno wrote about the content of the BCA’s confidential document: “Why are they so adamant that these notes are not distributed? What’s in them they wouldn’t want the media, the public or their customers to see? After all, it is just what they think of the evidence for the efficacy of chiropractic and its safety, so why not be open about it? And if they thought the article was in some way inaccurate, perhaps they could have asked the DM for a chance to respond; to ‘set the record straight’ as they might see it?”

It seems to me that what we're looking at here is nothing other than barefaced dishonesty. Can anyone see how the BCA can possibly reconcile their stance above with their assertion that they “welcome full, frank and open scientific debate”? See here:

Coincidentally, readers might be interested to know that Professor Edzard Ernst has blogged on this BCA issue today:

I just want to comment on the question above:

''Is it safe for my child to be treated by a chiropractor?"

The chiropractor will look at his or her patient as a whole person and consider their lifestyle when making recommendations for treatment. Once an issue has been diagnosed, the chiropractor can recommend a number of drug-free therapies that can provide relief from symptoms and treat the underlying cause of the concern. The treatment plan is highly individualized and will likely include a series of visits with the chiropractor for follow-up. So no need to worry. It is better to consult a doctor than to put the life of your child at risk.

The DoH are doing exactly the same with the content about the liverpool care pathway......the coalition budgetted their entire nhs 'bed days' savings on getting x people off the nhs books by 2014...hence the 'choose your 1%' campaigns and paying pcts to implement the lcp....you should look into it. Most recent manifestation was the abysmal claim that 90 % of palliative care doctors would want to die on the lcp'...turns out there was only a 20% response rate to the survey in the BMJ. however, it was reassessed by a firm called BAZIAN (owned by two former BMJ employees)...and the puffed up version was put on nhs choices as if it PROVED even doctors thought it was a fantastic idea!!!!

And the government also use 'patient opinion' to stifle all real patient opinions.....and only quote the supportive ones in their 'end of life care strategy ' documents too! Amazing!

It's happened:

Quote

Chiropractic rules February 28, 2013 at 6:07 pm
Establishment of The Royal College of Chiropractors

Further to the granting of a Royal Charter to the College of Chiropractors in November 2012, the Queen has now given permission for the College to change its name to The Royal College of Chiropractors.

The title Royal was sought to help the public understand that the College has a similar role to the Medical Royal Colleges in terms of promoting standards for practice quality, running postgraduate training for new graduates, providing continuing professional development opportunities and supporting research.

Tim Jay, President of The Royal College of Chiropractors, said:
‘It is particularly important, now that NHS funding for chiropractic treatment is emerging, that patients are aware of their treatment choices, that they know the care chiropractors provide for low back pain is a valid option supported by NICE and that the familiar entity of a Royal College is helping to support their interests.’

N.B. Within the profession, the College is a voluntary membership organisation which complements the General Chiropractic Council and the professional associations by supporting chiropractors to practice according to patient expectations, to implement good standards of governance, and to base their practice on patient-recorded measures of efficacy and satisfaction.
